Water. Awareness. Week. America.
~a global community service project created and developed by Save the Rain and a Northern California Key Club Successfully implemented annually for the last 4 years.
Four years ago, the Key Club President, Alyse Briody, at Mount Shasta High School approached Save the Rain about creating an awareness week around the global water crisis. Motivated by our work in Africa and that it only costs $15 to save someone from this fatal predicament, Alyse felt compelled to call her club and her peers to action.
Four years later, the Mount Shasta High School Key Club, along with the support of their fellow students, have helped Save the Rain bring clean water to over 60,000 people. W.A.W.A. has grown beyond the borders of California and is now being initiated in schools across the country. It has become a program that empowers America’s youth to affect change on a global level.
The W.A.W.A. program pairs schools in Africa to schools in the U.S. The week begins by giving American students a glimpse into the lives of African children struggling to survive the water crisis. The suggested activities within W.A.W.A. were designed to educate, engage, and inspire kids to make a difference on a global level. The beauty of the program is that it was created for the students by the students. The W.A.W.A. outcome is that U.S. schools generate the funding to implement rainwater harvesting projects built on African village schools. This action provides clean drinking water to entire communities. In some cases, we pair 2 or more US schools together in order to accomplish the financial goal. A chain of communication is created by Save the Rain between the schools both domestically and abroad. We will provide you with all the tools and support necessary to guarantee successful and empowering results.
W.A.W.A.'s suggested five days of fun and inspirational activities:
-
Day 1: School wide presentation by a Save the Rain ambassador
-
Day 2 & 3: Student-led in-class presentations
-
Day 4: A day of fun water-related activities and games
-
Day 5: A sponsored Rain Run and Celebration
W.A.W.A. 2010
This year, Save the Rain joined with Mt. Shasta and Weed High School Key Clubs in California to host a week of activities from April 12th -17th. The results were amazing. Students did in class presentations and truly became aware of the suffering being sustained by others in the world. A total of 456 laps were completed between the two schools from the Rain Run. Enough was raised to bring 800 people in Africa clean water for the rest of their lives and the lives of their off spring.
“The Rain Run is so simple and it makes such a huge difference. It was so gratifying to learn that I could create change in the world.”
~Cheyenne Smith, 15 years old, Weed High School
“I saved a life by running a lap around the track. How easy was that!” ~Daniel Cadwallader, 15 years old, Weed High School.
“After W.A.W last year, I was inspired, I cut down my shower times in the morning. Over a period of 8 months, I only took a two minute shower, thus saving over 10,000 gallons of water. That is the same amount of water it would take to supply 8 families with water for an entire year. I now know I can do my part.”
~Arianna Kosel, 16 years old, Mt. Shasta High School
“If our small high school can make such a huge difference, so can yours.” ~The Mt. Shasta High School Key Club Officers 2009
