Women's Water Initiative

It is a great honor to introduce three more of the Tanzanian women participating in the Women's Water Initiative. They are just a sample of the 125 women enrolled in our program. Each of them will receive the material and education to build a 5000 liter Rainwater Harvesting System on their home.

Meet Esther.  She is 57 years old and use to walk about 5 hours a day to collect water from a river in her village.  Her children had to walk between 2 and 4 hours a day for water.  Esther has nine people living in her household.  Two of her grandchildren have suffered from Malaria and one from Typhoid.  Esther has a garden and sells eggs and milk from her farm, and was earning about $22.00 a month.  Her rainwater harvesting tank was completed in April.  Now that Esther does not have to walk for water, she has more time to spend working in her garden and farm and has already paid back over 50% of her loan.

Meet Ndeonika.  She is 35 years old and has a household of 6. Ndeonika walks about 5 hours a day to a river in her village to collect water.  Her children walk about 3 hours a day.  Her family suffers from diarrhea regularly and one of her children has had Typhoid and one has had Malaria.  Her family earns about $42.00 a month from her garden and farm. Ndeonika will be receiving her system within the next two months.

Meet Sophia.  She is 35 years old and has 4 people living in her household.  Sophia has to walk 7 hours a day to a river in her village for water.  Her children walk 4 hours each day. Everyone in her family has suffered from Malaria, worms and diarrhea and Sophia has had Typhoid. She will be receiving her rainwater tank within the next two months. With the time given back to her from not walking for water and fighting water-borne illnesses, she will be able to earn more money from her garden to acquire more livestock for her small farm.

Check back as we will be adding more women regularly.
