Meet Gladness. There are 10 people that live in Gladness’s home. It is a small two room mud structure with a metal roof. Gladness and her children walk a 2 hour journey to the Malalla river to collect their domestic water needs, at minimum twice per day. She has decided that with the extra time she will get everyday from not fetching water, she will cultivate more of her farm land and sell the extra produce at market to repay her loan. At the time she was interviewed for the program, her entire family had malaria and some diarrheal disease. Gladness has a primary school education.

Meet Lightness. There are 8 people that live in Lighntess’ home. It is a small one room mud structure with a metal roof. Lightness and her children walk a 3 hour journey to the Namballa river to collect their domestic water needs, at minimum three times per day. So an average day for Lightness involves a 9 hour walk for water. Lightness has a medium size farm. She has decided that with the extra time she will get everyday from not fetching water, she will sew clothes and sell them at market to repay her loan. At the time she was interviewed for the program, 4 of her children had typhoid, worms and some diarrheal disease. Lighntess has a primary school education.

Meet Lillian. There are 7 people that live in Lillian’s home. It is a three room stone structure with a metal roof. Lillian and 3 of her children walk a 3.5 hour journey to the Namballa river to collect their domestic water needs, at minimum twice per day. So an average day for Lillian involves at least a 7 hour walk for water. Lillian has a beautiful garden and small farm. She also has livestock - chickens, cows and goats. She has decided that with the extra time she will get everyday from not fetching water, she will open a small shop and sell the extra milk, eggs and meat to repay her loan. At the time she was interviewed for the program, 2 of her children had malaria and some diarrheal disease and she was having difficulties with her pregnancy. Lillian has a secondary school education.
